3 Ways to Celebrate the Holidays as an International Student

By Naimeesha Murthy

It’s the holiday season! Time to relax and enjoy yourself. Being away from family and close friends can be difficult at this time of year, but it can also be a great chance to have new experiences and create lasting memories. Here are some ideas on how you can make the most of this cheerful season:

With no exams or essays to worry about, you and your friends can go out and see the places that you wanted to all semester long. This is a great time to explore and learn more about the different states and U.S. culture. With affordable lodging options like Airbnb, campsites, and hostels, you can travel without breaking your wallet.

2. Celebrate
During this time, you can meet with other international students who are in the same situation as you. You can all come together to celebrate the holidays in different ways, such as planning a Holiday potluck party. From sharing hot chocolate, to wearing ugly holiday sweaters (a strange American tradition), or even building snowmen, spending this time with others is better than spending it alone. Plus, you can make new memories with new friends!
3. Volunteer
Since you have the free time, why not do something charitable and help keep your homesickness at bay? Most communities hold Christmas dinners for those in need and they’re always happy to take volunteers who can contribute their time, giving you a chance to give back to your community and meet new people.
