International Education Week Essay Contest

International Education Week Essay Contest 2016

"One's destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things."

- Henry Miller

How do you think studying abroad changes the way you see the world around you?

November 14-18, 2016 is International Education Week (IEW), an initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education. IEW is an effort to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences in the United States. To celebrate international students here in the U.S. and Canada, we at WES Advisor are inviting you to participate in our essay contest!

It is important to have your unique voice be heard as an international student, and we can’t wait to read what you come up with! Here are the details to participate:
  • Topic: The quote and question at the top of this post are to serve as the inspiration for your essay. Let us know how study abroad affects your view of the world.
  • Deadline: You can submit your essay starting October 13. The deadline for submissions is November 11, 2016 (no entries will be accepted after that date).
  • How to enter: To enter your submission, go to our submission page. Only one entry is allowed per person. Essays should be submitted in English and can be a maximum of 500 words. Submissions that do not follow these criteria will not be eligible for consideration.
  • Judging: Entries will be evaluated by WES Advisor editors. Essays will be judged according to the following criteria:
    • Originality (25 percent)
    • Creativity (25 percent)
    • Use of language (25 percent)
    • Relevance to the prompt (25 percent)
Essay submissions must follow proper English spelling and grammar, so be sure to edit and re-read your entries before submitting.

Prizes: The top four submissions chosen by our editors will be published to the WES Advisor blog. The top two winners will each receive a $50 Amazon gift card. We will announce the contest winners on Thursday, November 17.

We look forward to reading your submissions! Good luck!

  4. 500 words for an essay seems too less. I feel self expression should not be limited. There are a thousands of student world wide, each with an individual perspective of his own. It's not necessary that every perspective can be expressed within 500 words. I humbly make a plea for the allowance of more words. Please let me know if its possible. I tried editing to cut off my essay to the least but it's no fun. Creativity should be boundless to be felt at its best. Please take this into consideration. Thank you & much grateful.
